enabling the youth attain practical skills
Youth unemployment is one of the biggest problems affecting Robert shanty compound and other unplanned settlements such as Mulenga and Mwaiseni shanty compounds. Most families live below the poverty datum line; as such they don’t have the capacity to send their children to school let alone college or university. Consequently, the youths are condemned to a life of misery and uncertainty. Faced with prospects of a bleak future, the youth are obviously bound to resort to mischief which may result in far reaching consequences not only for Robert compound but the entire nation as a whole.
The first batch of students to have attended our very own Beautiful Gate School when it just got established in 2004 completed their secondary education in 2013. Unfortunately, these are now slowly turning back to the streets for a living as they don’t have any meaningful skills to earn a living. Following a consultative meeting which was initiated by these enthusiastic young men and women, it was resolved that the only way Beautiful Gate would help provide a “lifeline” to these young people is by way of equipping them with practical skills namely: ICT, carpentry, welding, automotive mechanics, auto electrical and tailoring.
